Why a working truck needs one
Trucks spend more of their life under sustained high load than most cars do. Towing, hauling and long climbs are exactly the conditions in which blow-by accumulates fastest in the crankcase, and the PCV system routes that back through the intake.
On a direct-injected V8 there is no fuel washing the back of the intake valves, so the oil vapour bakes on as carbon and slowly costs airflow. On any engine, oil reaching the intake charge lowers effective octane, which matters most under the load a truck sees when it is working.
A conventional catch can only collects oil that has already left the engine. The Tracy Lewis system does two more things:
- Full-time crankcase vacuum keeps the crankcase under vacuum continuously, so pressure never builds and oil is not forced past seals or back into the intake tract.
- Clean Side Separator, included with every kit, addresses oil ingestion upstream of the throttle body — a route an ordinary catch can cannot reach.
