Can You Supercharge a V6? Yes — Here's What It Takes

Tracy Lewis Performance |

Yes, you can supercharge a V6. Bolt-on supercharger systems exist for the GM 3.6 V6 — the LLT, LFX and LGX engines found in the Camaro and Cadillac ATS and CTS. A Stage 1 Overkill system typically adds 100 to 125 horsepower, installs in a weekend with no permanent modifications, and is completely reversible.

The short version: the V6 is not a compromise platform. Supercharged, a 3.6 makes V8-like power, and the same engine has upgrade paths to a reliable 500+ horsepower.

What a supercharged V6 actually makes

On the GM 3.6 V6, a Stage 1 kit typically produces gains of 100-125 horsepower over stock. On the Cadillac ATS specifically, Stage 1 takes the factory 260 wheel horsepower to 350-370 wheel horsepower on a chassis dyno. Stage 3 kits, using the larger D-series Procharger head unit and full fuel system upgrades, have dynoed around 450 wheel horsepower with room to grow.

On the 2008-2013 Cadillac CTS V6, the system will bolt on up to 200+ horsepower across the Stage range.

Do you need other modifications first?

No. You are not required to have any other modifications on the vehicle. Every requirement to install a supercharger on a 3.6 V6 is included in the kit, and all Stages are designed to work with a factory engine.

What is in the kit

  • Procharger supercharger unit — P1SC for Stages 1 and 2, D1SC for Stage 3. Self-contained oiling system, so no oil lines connect to the engine. The D-series supports up to 16 psi on the 3.6.
  • Overkill 8-rib pulley system — mounting brackets use existing engine attachment points. A new independent crank pulley interlocks with the factory pulley and runs a dedicated 8-rib belt that does not interfere with the factory accessory belt.
  • Full intercooler system — air-to-air intercooler, blow off valve, custom machined MAF housing, silicone and aluminium tubing with T-bolt clamps.
  • Catch can system — separates oil vapours in the PCV system and keeps oil residue out of the supercharger and intercooler while in boost.
  • Tuning — an HP Tuners suite and custom tuning support for you or your chosen installer.
  • Accessories — full intake with K&N filter, AC Delco spark plugs designed for boost, a MAP sensor that reads boost, MAF wiring extension harness, throttle body spacer, prefabricated vacuum lines, and oil for several Procharger oil changes.

Is it reversible?

Yes. The installation is 100% bolt-on with no permanent modifications to the vehicle, and the system can be removed and the car returned to stock. This is one of the practical differences between supercharging and a turbo system on these engines.

How long does it take to install?

It is a weekend job for a competent home mechanic. Installation is also available at our shop in Palmetto, Florida.

Which V6 engines are covered

Engine Vehicles
LLT 3.6 2010-2011 Camaro, 2008-2013 Cadillac CTS
LFX 3.6 2012-2015 Camaro, 2013-2015 Cadillac ATS, 2012-2014 CTS
LGX 3.6 2016-2024 Camaro, 2016-2019 Cadillac ATS

Fitment is engine-specific rather than model-specific. A 2016 Camaro may be a 2.0 LTG, a 3.6 LGX or a 6.2 LT1, and the correct kit differs in each case.

FAQ

Can you supercharge a V6?

Yes. Bolt-on supercharger systems are available for the GM 3.6 V6 in the LLT, LFX and LGX variants. A Stage 1 system typically adds 100-125 horsepower.

How much power does a supercharged 3.6 V6 make?

Stage 1 typically adds 100-125 horsepower. On the Cadillac ATS, Stage 1 takes the factory 260 wheel horsepower to 350-370 wheel horsepower. Stage 3 with the larger D-series head unit and full fuel system upgrades has dynoed around 450 wheel horsepower.

Do I need to modify my engine first?

No. All Stages are designed to work with a factory 3.6 engine and no other modifications are required.

Is supercharging a V6 reversible?

Yes. The system is 100% bolt-on with no permanent modifications, so the vehicle can be returned to stock.

How much boost does the system run?

The D-series Procharger head unit supports up to 16 psi on the 3.6.

Is tuning included?

Yes. Each kit comes with an HP Tuners suite option and custom tuning support for you or your installation shop. An AEM 30-0334 air/fuel gauge is highly recommended if you are tuning remotely with us by email.
